The illegibility emanates mainly from two factors-the background and the choice of fonts. However there are certain rules of thumbs that you can apply to get rid of this particular problem:
- A multi hued background may sound very stylish, but they are a strict no-no so far as the websites are concerned. The backgrounds of web pages should always be of light color and the fonts of dark. The converse is also welcome as far as the fonts are clearly legible.
- But in case of long and descriptive contents, light colored fonts should not be used. In these cases you have to stick to dark background-light font rule for minimum strain of eyes.
- For the same reason, don’t get tempted to experiment with fonts; the standard fonts like Times New Roman or Verdana do fine with your contents. Also make sure that fonts are not too small; 10 to 12 points are just fine for the maximum legibility.
Use the graphics sensibly
For some web designers, animations and colorful graphics are short cut to success; but they are not.
In reality, these things make your site slower and that irks your visitor to death causing the exodus of traffic from your site.
But at times you can not do without them; there are times when the contents need to be accompanied by graphics. When using graphics is a must, use them in minimum possible reduced size. You can also save the graphics as gif.htm instead of jpg.htm for faster loading.
Help your visitors sail through your site smoothly
Haphazard banner ads can cause irritation of your visitors; place them in the proper places with colored text. Use the descriptive banner ads to make your visitors understand what they can expect from clicking on them.
Don’t neglect the contents
After everything, content is the king and so make sure to use informative, to the point, keyword rich content for your site.
